Beat the Devil Time, time, what is time? My parents recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and for the occasion my father made a book looking back on their engagement and first year of marriage. The first date they ever went on was to see this film, Beat the Devil - my father was a film reviewer for CBC radio. For you Torontonians, they went to the Odeon at Yonge and Carlton (now a Magic Lantern?). So, other night, we watched it and it's oddly wonderful, wonderfully odd. Directed by John Huston, starring Humphrey Bogart, and with wonderful parts from Robert Morley and the perfect, otherworldly Peter Lorre. Script was aided by Truman Capote and you can hear it in a flirty scene between Jennifer Jones and Humph, or here in this bit on time. I recommend the whole thing.
"Time, time, what is time? Swiss manufacture it. French hoard it. Italians squander it. Americans say it is money. Hindus say it does not exist. Know what I say? I say time is a crook."
