John Coltrane Softly, As In a Morning Sunrise
If I were only allowed inside the Village Vanguard for this one song from the genius live set from 1961, from the gentle opening piano and the sweet tones of Coltrane's soprano, through the gathering speed and joy of the melody, and through the blissful and ferocious ending, I'd happily leave and walk out into New York(but why?) Everything I love about Coltrane is in this standard tune; softness, interplay, spirituality, exploration, and something beyond. Maybe my favorite piece of music.
