“Andrew’s Brain" by E. L. Doctorow

I should also mention “Andrew’s Brain,” the last novel E. L. Doctorow wrote before he died. I listened to the audiobook, which Doctorow himself read aloud in his own understated but perfect intonation. As soon as it ended, I felt compelled to listen to it again, and then I needed to get the book to see it on the page and figure out how he’d done it.

I generally judge whatever I’ve read most recently as “the last great book.” In the present case, it’s “The Girls of Atomic City,” by Denise Kiernan, about the World War II production of bomb-quality uranium in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
