"The Transit of Venus," "Angle of Repose," and more. “The Transit of Venus.” I went back to it this year and expected it wouldn’t hold up and it did — in spades. It is brilliant. “Angle of Repose,” ditto, “Infinite Jest” needs a whole summer to rediscover, “Ethan Frome” for a perfect short read, and I always welcome Anne Tyler when I want reassurance that the human race is a good idea, and P. G. Wodehouse will second that sentiment. Oh, and “Shadow Country,” which immediately sends me back to Anne Tyler for that reassurance; it’s a bleak book.
